You run a good business, your customers are happy, and maybe you have a website you are proud of. Still, it is your competitor who shows up when someone nearby searches for exactly what you offer. How to get visible on Google is one of the questions we hear most often from Norwegian businesses, and the answer is less mysterious than many think. There are no secret tricks, but there is a craft that works, and most of it can be understood without a technical background.
In this guide we cover the three places you can appear on Google, what to do first, how long it takes, and which mistakes to avoid.
The three places you can be visible on Google
When someone searches on Google, they see three types of results in practice. They work in completely different ways, and it pays to understand the difference before you spend time or money.
Ads
PaidShown at the top and labelled «Sponsored». You pay per click, and the visibility disappears the same day you turn off the budget. Fast to start, but never free.
The map and local results
FreeThe map section showing businesses near the searcher. Driven by your Google Business Profile, reviews and distance. Often the fastest route for local businesses.
Organic results
FreeThe regular results below the ads and the map. Here it is about content and technical quality on your website. Takes the longest, but gives visibility that lasts.
All three can be right for your business, and they complement each other. The most common mistake is about the order: many pay for ads before the foundation is in place. Then you send expensive clicks to a page that does not convince anyone, and pay for visits that never become customers.
The fastest route for local businesses: Business Profile and reviews
If your customers are mainly in your local area, for example if you run a workshop, a hair salon, an accounting firm or a trade business, your Google Business Profile is the most important place to start. The profile is free, it controls how you appear in the map and the local results, and changes there often show results faster than anything else you can do.
- Fill in everything: opening hours, phone, address, services, photos and the area you cover
- Choose categories that actually describe what you do
- Ask happy customers for a review right after the job is done
- Reply to all reviews, including the critical ones, politely and specifically
- Keep the profile alive with updates and fresh photos
Reviews are not just decoration. Google itself states that reviews and ratings are part of how local results are ranked, and for the searcher they are often the first thing they read. A steady stream of genuine reviews almost always beats an occasional burst of effort. If you want to make this systematic, read more about how we work with Google reviews.
The foundation on your website
To become more visible on Google in the organic results, Google needs to understand what your page is about, and the people who click need to find answers. It sounds simple, but this is where many websites fail. The good news: you almost never need a brand new website to fix this. Start with what you have.
Title and description
Every page on your site has a title and a description that Google shows in the search results. This is your ad space in organic search, and it is free. «Home» or just the company name says nothing. «Plumber in Hamar, fast help with acute leaks» tells both Google and the customer exactly what you offer and where. Go through your most important pages and give each one a title that says what you do, and where you do it.
Content that answers what people actually search for
People rarely search for your company name. They search for their problem: «heat pump price», «accountant for sole proprietorships», «cost of replacing a roof». Every important service should therefore have its own page that properly answers questions like these, in your own words and for your local conditions.
Quick check of your own website
Does your front page have a title that says what you do and where? Does each service have its own page with substantial text? Do your pages answer questions customers actually ask? Does the site load fast and work well on mobile? Are your phone number and contact details easy to find?
This is the core of search engine optimisation. It is craftsmanship, not magic, and most of it can be done on the website you already have.
How can a business rank higher on Google?
Once the foundation is in place, regular content is what lifts you further. The recipe is simpler than many think: write down the ten questions customers most often ask you by phone or email, and answer one of them thoroughly each month as its own article or page.
The reason this works is that Google tries to show the best answer to every search. Whoever answers best wins the search. Large competitors often have generic pages written for the whole country. You can be more specific, more local and more honest, and that is a real advantage. Over time, every answer builds a new entrance to your website, and that is how you become more visible on Google without increasing your ad budget.
The new dimension: AI answers
More and more people ask ChatGPT and Google's AI overviews instead of scrolling through search results. «Which accountant should I choose in Hamar?» is a question that is now just as likely to be asked to an AI service as typed into Google.
The good part is that these services pull their answers from websites that explain things clearly and tidily, and from sources like your Business Profile and reviews. The same groundwork that makes you visible in regular search also makes you a source AI services can use and mention. Clear answers, correct facts about your business and tidy structure are the currency in both worlds. If you want to go deeper, we have written more about AI visibility.
How long does it take? An honest answer
Here we will be honest, because many are not. SEO takes time. Changes to your Business Profile can show results within weeks. Organic improvements usually take weeks to months before they show clearly, and competitive keywords can take even longer. Google itself says that no one can guarantee a specific position, so be sceptical of anyone who promises one.
What is true, however: if you do the groundwork steadily, you build visibility that lasts, unlike ads that disappear the day your budget does.
Realistic expectations
Business Profile and reviews: results within weeks Titles, descriptions and better content: weeks to months Competitive keywords: months of steady work Ads: visibility the same day, but only as long as you pay
Common mistakes when you want to be seen on Google
Most businesses that fail in search make one or more of these mistakes:
- Paying for ads that send people to a page that does not work or convince
- Buying links or believing offers of a «guaranteed first place»
- Ignoring reviews, or only replying to the positive ones
- Giving up after three weeks because «it is not working»
- Writing for the search engine instead of the people who should become customers
The common thread is impatience and shortcuts. Google has spent over twenty years learning to detect shortcuts, so the safest strategy is also the simplest: be genuinely useful, and be it consistently.
How to measure progress, completely free
Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows which searches people used to find you, how many clicked, and which pages appear in the results. It takes little time to set up, and reading the main numbers requires no technical background.
Check it month by month rather than day by day, and look for direction: do you appear in more searches than before? Are more people clicking through? Then you are on the right track, and you can see in black and white whether the work is starting to bring you more customers from Google.
